When parents start looking for a school, most of them begin on Google, usually on a phone. Understanding what they type, and what Google shows them, is the first step to making sure your school appears.
What parents actually search for
Parents rarely type a school's full name unless they already know it. Their searches tend to fall into a few groups:
- Near me searches: "best school near me", "CBSE school near me", "play school near me".
- Town or area searches: "CBSE school in Panchkula", "best school in Sector 15", "boarding school in Himachal".
- Need-based searches: "school with transport in [area]", "school admission 2027-28 [town]", "nursery admission [town]".
- Checking a school: once they have a shortlist, they search the school's name to see its website, photos, reviews and results.
Google Maps comes first for local searches
For "near me" and town searches, Google usually shows a map with a few schools at the top, before ordinary website results. Those listings come from Google Business Profile.
To give your school the best chance of appearing there:
- Claim and verify your school's Google Business Profile.
- Choose the right category and complete every field: address, phone, website, hours.
- Add real photos of the campus, classrooms and events, and add new ones regularly.
- Ask happy parents to leave genuine reviews, and reply to every review politely.
What your website needs
Your website supports your Maps listing and helps you appear in normal search results.
- Clear page titles. Each page needs its own title that says what it is and where you are, such as "Admissions 2027-28 | [School name], [Town]".
- Your location in the content. Mention your town and area naturally on the homepage, contact page and admissions page.
- Speed on phones. Slow sites lose visitors and rank less well.
- Search Console. Connect your website to Google Search Console and submit a sitemap, so Google knows about all your pages and tells you about problems.
- Fresh content. Results, events and news pages give Google, and parents, a reason to come back.
When parents search your school by name
Once you are on a shortlist, parents search your school's name. What they see in that moment matters: your website, your Google listing with photos and reviews, and perhaps your social media.
Make sure those all look current and consistent: the same phone number everywhere, recent photos, a working website and a complete disclosure section. A well-kept online presence makes the decision easier for parents, and the next step is usually a phone call or a visit.
